Community Development and Conflict Resolution
Resolutions First is involved in the Greater Manchester Hub, Active Learning for Active Citizenship programme. As part of this, Resolutions First set up the Community Conflict Resolution Forum with a group of parents of children from various East Manchester primary schools. The aim in bringing together these parents was to deliver further training in conflict resolution and to look at ways they could work with local schools and communities on awareness raising and research projects, exploring conflict within a community context.
By January 2006, the group had:
- worked on a research project identifying and analysing conflict that is happening their respective communities, particularly around the fear of crime and violence among community members;
- delivered training to children and adults on managing conflict between parents and teenagers,
- begun exploring a project to look at conflicts that exist between white communities and local Black and Minority Ethnic communities, focusing on the role of women in conflict.
Members of the group are all working towards an accredited certificate in conflict resolution as well.
Parents group at St Anne's RC Primary School
Resolutions First ran an accredited course in Conflict Resolution with a group of parents from St Anne's RC Primary School. Subjects covered in the training included communication skills, child protection, conflict resolution and working with young people. The course was run over a ten week period and the participants came out with an OCN Level 1 qualification. More importantly though, the parents were inspired to set up an after school Friendship Club, involving over 30 children.
