Peer Mentoring at South Chadderton High School
South Chadderton High wanted to set up a peer mentoring scheme, whereby a selected group of year 10 pupils would support the new intake of year 7 pupils. Pupils went through a selection process which focussed upon emotional literacy as opposed to academic ability and Resolutions First ran the training for this group of 25 peer mentors. This took twenty hours of teaching time and covered a range of emotional, social and conflict resolution skills, with pupils achieving an accredited certificate at the end of the course.
As a consequence of the training, the peer mentors supported year 7 pupils on a weekly basis, going into year 7 form groups to run activities and games, and also being on hand to deal with difficulties that the new pupils were facing. As well as enabling younger pupils to cope with the transition from primary to secondary school, the scheme increased the confidence of the year 10 peer mentors, gave them a broad range of skills and helped to foster a sense of caring within the school.
