Conflict Resolution Work Skills

Incorporating two distinct units:

  1. Introduction to Conflict Resolution Work Skills
  2. Developing Conflict Resolution Work Skills

Overview

A progressive programme covering two National Qualification Framework levels. These programmes are practice based and each unit involves 20 hours of teaching, plus assignments and projects for assessment. These two units can be combined with Developing a Peer Support Programme, giving a qualification equivalent to a GCSE.

Length of course: 10 weeks (2 hours per week) per unit

Introduction to Conflict Resolution Work Skills - Level 1 OCN

Developing Conflict Resolution Work Skills - Level 2 OCN

Aim

To use interactive, person-centred learning and teaching methods to engage participants in developing a range of positive, realistic responses to conflict situations, leading to a certificate in a range of Conflict Resolution Skills.

Objectives

Participants will:

  • Develop an understanding of what conflict is and its impact upon our daily lives at personal, local and global scales.
  • Explore feelings associated with conflict.
  • Explore their own experiences of conflict and preferred conflict management styles.
  • Understand the positive side of conflict.
  • Develop an understanding of the processes and practices of conflict resolution.
  • Develop a broad range of knowledge, understanding and skills for resolving conflict.
  • Develop skills for managing anger.
Developing a Peer Support Programme*

Length of course: 10 weeks (2 hours per week)

Introduction to Peer Group Support - Level 2 OCN

Aim

To give participants an overview of what peer group support is and to equip them to set up a peer group support scheme in their school.

Objectives

Participants will:

  • Develop an understanding of what peer group support is.
  • Know practically how to set up a peer group support scheme.
  • Understand the skills and qualities needed for peer mentors.
  • Understand child protection issues in relation to peer support schemes.

Understand the role that peer group support plays in reflecting the values of conflict resolution.

Community Mediation Skills

Length of course: 12 weeks (3 hours per week)

Accreditation (optional): Community Mediation Skills - Level 3 OCN

Affiliated to Mediation UK

Aim

To use interactive, person-centred learning and teaching methods to deliver a range of knowledge, understanding and skills, enabling participants to become effective mediators at the community level.

Objectives

Participants will:

  • Explore what conflict means for people, and enable them to understand different responses to conflict.
  • Be able to communicate clearly what mediation is and how it compares with other conflict resolution methods.
  • Develop understanding of how people in disputes think, feel and behave, and how this contributes to the dispute.
  • Increase their self awareness and self confidence.
  • Develop skills to work with a range of individuals and groups.
  • Develop understanding of the mediation process.
  • Practice using mediation skills.
  • Practice mediating disputes between neighbours and relatives through role-play.
  • Understand what situations are suitable for mediation.
  • Learn skills for dealing with conflict more effectively.
Training the trainer - Conflict Resolution and Behaviour Management*

Length of course: 2 days (9.00am - 3.30pm), followed by 4 x 2hr tutorials

Accreditation (optional): Level 2 OCN

Aim

The programme is designed to help participants recognise the dynamics of conflict and to develop the skills necessary to manage conflict situations effectively.

Objectives

Participants will:

  • Develop an understanding of what conflict is and peoples' perceptions of conflict.
  • Learn about the causes of intra- and inter- personal conflict.
  • Develop an understanding of the stages a conflict goes through.
  • Explore different responses to conflict.
  • Understand the ethos of conflict resolution.
  • Develop the skills and qualities needed to resolve conflict.
  • Explore different behaviour management techniques.
  • Learn the language of conflict resolution and behaviour management.
  • Look at how to develop peer support initatives.

Assessment: 3 essay assignments.

* These courses are particularly suitable for teachers’ Continuing Professional Development.
