Training children to be playground buddies
Level: Primary, KS2
Length of course: 12-14 hours teaching, with the option of an assembly and a support meeting with member of staff
Aim
To enable selected year 4-6 children to become effective playground buddies.
Learning Objectives
- To enable children to understand their role as playground buddies.
- To equip children with the skills to spot other children who are looking lonely, bored or upset and strategies for helping them.
- To teach children empathy and listening skills.
- To give children a 'treasure box' of games to organise at playtime and to develop their confidence and skills in organising playground games.
- To build children's self-confidence, social skills and teamwork skills.
Training children and young people to be peer mediators
Level: Primary KS2 and Secondary KS3 & 4
Length of course: 20 hours teaching, with the option of an assembly and support meeting with member of staff.
N.B.This course is most suitable for children who already have experience of being playground buddies, or have a sufficient level of communication and social skills.
Aim
To enable selected children / young people to become effective mediators of conflict with their peers, mainly at playtimes and lunchtimes.
Learning Objectives
- To give children / young people an understanding of what mediation is and of their role as peer mediators.
- To equip children / young people with the skills to spot other children who are in [low level] conflict and to help them resolve the conflict without resorting to violence.
- To enable children / young people to identify which situations are suitable for mediation.
- To teach children/ young people a range of conflict resolution skills, including developing empathy, positive body language and active listening.
- To build children / young people's self-confidence, social skills and teamwork skills.
Peer Mentoring
Level: Secondary, KS4
Accreditation: Level 2 OCN
Length of course: 20 hours of teaching
Aim
To use a range of interactive teaching and learning methods, in order to help young people to understand what peer mentors do and to develop the range of skills needed to become effective peer mentors.
Learning Objectives
- To enable pupils to understand what peer mentors can and cannot do, the skills needed for the role and the boundaries that must be set.
- To develop pupils' self-confidence and ability to work as part of a team.
- To develop pupils' abilities in planning peer mentoring sessions, co-facilitation, modelling helpful behaviour and evaluating sessions.
- To equip pupils with skills of active listening, questioning and creative problem solving.
- To develop pupils understanding of what causes conflict and some of the values of resolving conflict positively.
- To equip pupils to understand what constitutes bullying behaviour and to know how to respond to this.
- To increase pupils valuing of diversity and awareness of causes of prejudice.
